Leather End Braces or Button Braces for Trousers What Do You Call Them and How Do They Work?
Button braces, button in braces or button on braces however you wish to refer to them are the original style of vintage braces worn by men. Mens trousers traditionally sat higher on the waist and buttons were fitted to the waist band as a matter of course. Braces with loops for buttons were then used to hold the trousers up. Hence the name button braces or button on braces as they loop over the button on the waistband of the trouser. Some button braces may have ends which are made of different material other than leather such as elastic or braid runner ends. All our button braces have strong real leather ends. This leather loop may be flat leather or rolled leather.
In modern day, not all trousers are made with buttons already on the waistband and most are designed to sit slightly lower. Buttons can quite easily be sewn onto the waistband. If you are having a suit specially made for you it is something which should be considered.
All our button braces have leather runners which work in pairs, two pairs at the front and one pair at the rear. The pairs of buttons on the waistband are usually around 2.5 to 3 inches apart. Before putting on your trousers it is easiest to fasten the leather loops over the two buttons at the rear of the trouser waistband. Then pull on your trousers as normal and fasten them. Bring the trouser braces elastic over your shoulders and attach the remaining leather loops to the 4 buttons on the front waistband. This total of 6 button ends provides a secure fit. The metal slide adjusters can then be used to adjust the length of elastic for a comfortable fit.
