Guide to Attaching Braces to Trousers
The first time of wearing trouser braces can be daunting. Whichever brace style you have chosen, the following will assist you put them on and guide you how to wear trouser braces.
How to put braces on trousers – Button On
The below guide is intended for button on braces with leather ends which fasten onto the trouser waistband using buttons which have already been sewn onto the trouser waistband.
- Before you put on your trousers lay them out flat on a surface ensuring the front fastening buttons and zip of the trousers are open. It is easier to attach braces to trousers before putting them on.
- At the rear of the waistband there should be 2 buttons, most frequently positioned on the inside of the waistband. Ensure the braces are the correct way around as if they were going to be worn and then attach each leather button holder from the rear of the braces onto the buttons.
- Then fasten the remaining front right side two buttons and two front left side buttons to the braces again ensuring that this is as if they were going to be worn.
- Once all 6 buttons are attached to the braces now is the time to put your trousers on fastening them up as normal and ensure that they sit at your natural waist and not too high so that they are uncomfortable.
- Then adjust the front metal sliders (levers) to ensure a comfortable fit.
How to put braces on trousers which have 4 clips
The below guide is intended for clip on X braces with four clips which fasten onto the trouser waistband.
- Before you put on your trousers lay them out flat on a surface ensuring the front fastening buttons and zip of the trousers are open. It is easier to attach the two rear braces clips to your trousers before putting them on.
- At the rear of the waistband are frequently trouser belt loops or if not work out from the centre trouser seam. Ensure the braces are the correct way around as if they were going to be worn and then attach each clip from the rear of the braces just on the outside of each belt loop at the rear of the trouser waistband. (Do not attach over the belt loops as this will damage the clips over time.)
- Once the rear 2 clips are attached to the trousers now is the time to put your trousers on fastening them up as normal and ensure that they sit at your natural waist and not too high so that they are uncomfortable.
It may be easier to do the next part in front of a mirror.
- Now take each front strap over your shoulders approximately midway between the shoulder and your neck. Using the mirror, you will then note the position where they naturally fall or hang at the front of your trousers.
- Then clip them onto the front trouser waistband as long as that is not over a belt loop. The intention is to have the braces straps hanging as straight down as possible and not angled. The clips position on both sides should also be balanced.
- Then adjust the front metal sliders (levers) to ensure a comfortable fit.
- Finally, take a moment to check both front and back view. Our X back braces all benefit from a metal X at the rear. This can be repositioned to ensure a comfortable fit and no gaping at the back. Check that the clips are evenly distributed and securely gripping the trouser waistband and adjust if required.
How to put braces on trousers which have 3 clips
The below guide is intended for clip on Y braces with three clips which fasten onto the trouser waistband.- Before you put on your trousers lay them out flat on a surface ensuring the front fastening buttons and zip of the trousers are open. It is easier to attach the one rear braces clip to your trousers before putting them on.
- Ensure the braces are the correct way around as if they were going to be worn and then attach the clip either at the centre of the rear waistband or just off centre if the trousers have a central rear belt loop. Do not attach over the belt loops as this will damage the clips over time.
- Once the rear clip is attached to the trousers now is the time to put your trousers on fastening them up as normal and ensure that they sit at your natural waist and not too high so that they are uncomfortable.
It may be easier to do the next part in front of a mirror.
- Now take each front strap over your shoulders approximately midway between the shoulder and your neck. Using the mirror, you will then note the position where they naturally fall or hang at the front of your trousers.
- Then clip them onto the front trouser waistband if that is not over a belt loop. The intention is to have the braces straps hanging as straight down as possible and not angled. The clip position on both sides should also be balanced.
- Then adjust the front metal sliders (levers) to ensure a comfortable fit.
- Finally, take a moment to check both front and back view. Y Back braces generally have a leather patch at the rear which cannot be adjusted. If there is any gaping at the back the rear clip may need repositioning.
- Check that the clips are evenly distributed and that all three are securely gripping the trouser waistband and adjust if required.
